Dental Implant SurgeryMissing teeth can be replaced with dental implant surgery. Dental implants are the best way to conceal one or more missing teeth. Dental implants replicate the natural function and appearance of your lost teeth. The more work involved in creating and matching a dental implant to your existing teeth, the more expensive treatment may be. Replacing Your Missing ToothDuring the dental implant surgery, a titanium root, which mimics your natural tooth roots, is placed in the gum. The titanium root is implanted and left to heal for up to three months. The titanium root serves as an anchor for the support post of the dental implant. When it has healed, the support post is screwed into the root and a dental crown is placed on top of it. Dental implants serve as replacements for missing teeth. They look and function the same as your normal teeth. You will find it more comfortable to bite and chew food when you have completed dental implant surgery. Dental implants make it easier to bite off food and chew it completely without pain. They also give you more confidence in your smile. Dental Implant SurgeryYour dentist can perform dental implant surgery in just a few hours. Some dentists allow their patients to listen to music or watch television while they are in surgery. Dental implant surgery is painless and patients are usually very comfortable. Your dentist will first use a local anesthetic to numb the area being worked on. The anesthetic makes it possible for your dentist to perform the surgery without causing you any pain. For some, numbing the mouth may not be enough. Many patients prefer to be sedated before dental implant surgery. If you want to be sedated, it is important to ask your dentist to do so before the procedure begins. When you are comfortable, the dentist will make a small incision into the gum tissue revealing the bone where the dental implant will be placed. A special tool is used to create a socket in the bone. Titanium dental implants are inserted into the socket. Your dentist will use sutures to close the gum tissue around the titanium root and the dental implant surgery is over once the sutures are in place. After the gums have healed, you will need to come back to have the support post and crown put in. The Problem with Missing TeethDental implant surgery is important if you are missing one or more teeth. Your long-term oral and medical health are affected by the health of your teeth and gums. Gaps and missing teeth can affect the way your jaw closes. Existing teeth can tilt, turn or shift into the open gap. Teeth not in their correct placement can lead to bite issues and put increased pressure on the jaw joints (TMJs). Teeth not in alignment make it difficult to tear, bite and chew food. Food can become lodge in the gaps and put you at risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Dental implant surgery is an excellent treatment option if you are missing one or more teeth and have difficulty biting and chewing food or experience jaw pain. |
