Dental ServicesRegular dental services and twice daily brushing and flossing are the most important ways to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. NJ Dentist Sultan Sherzoy and his team at Bogota Dental Center strive to formulate comprehensive dental health plans that include a baseline x-ray, and regular cleanings based on the dental makeup of each patient. Most commonly the average patient needs to have a dental cleaning every six months. Sometimes a patient, if their diet and chemistry cause them to form plaque and tartar quickly, need more frequent cleanings. Tooth decay and gum disease are best prevented by early detection and treatment. Three ways to detect tooth decay are: Thorough visual examination, probing, and x-rays are the most common methods of detection. Gum disease is found through physical examination, by seeing signs of inflammation, chiefly redness and swelling, in the gum line. It is also detected by measuring if there is looseness in the gums. Healthy gums adhere closely to the teeth, unhealthy gums form pockets for food and bacteria to cause more damage. Dental services are geared to prevent dental health problems. Once there is an issue, there is a great deal that can be done, and for most problems, there are a variety of options. Cavities are the most common issue that people seek dental services for. Most cavities are painless, and only cause sensitivity or pain once they decay all the way through the enamel and into the dentin. This makes early detection and treatment important. Very shallow cavities may only need treatment with fluoride to rebuild the minerals in the hole. Treatment of more serious cavities involves two main processes. The first portion is the removal of the decayed part of the tooth, which is known as drilling, and is done with a high speed dental drill. The second part of the treatment is known as filling, and this involves replacing the missing tooth structure plus a little bit more to protect the dentin from further infection and keep the enamel from decaying more. Often an injection of a numbing agent is involved. Depending on the depth of the decay, sometimes a base is used to help insulate the nerves of the tooth from cold and hot temperatures, and sometimes a liner is used to reduce sensitivity as well. If the cavity is not that deep, these may not be used. Then the cavity is filled using most commonly silver, white resin, gold, or porcelain. Dental services involving fillings offer different options based on the patient and dentist's preferences. Fillings are often sensitive for a day or two after they are applied. Deep fillings can be sensitive for as long as two weeks. If they are uncomfortable for longer than two weeks, it is usually either that the filling was built up too far and it needs to be shaved down a bit, or that there was a pocket and/or hidden infection trapped inside the filling. If an infection is there, further dental services, namely a root canal, may be necessary. |
