Dentures

Before dental implants, dentures use to be the only solution for missing teeth. Teeth may be missing because of tooth decay, gum disease, an accident or simple old age. If you are only missing a few teeth, dentures may not be the right solution for you. Dental implants give you an alternative option that is more permanent than denture plates affixed to the gums.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are ideal for patients who are only missing a few teeth. Many people assume the only way to fix spaces caused by missing teeth is to have all of their healthy teeth removed and be fitted for denture plates. A new, modern way to fix spaces in teeth allows patients to keep their natural teeth. Dental implants are ceramic crowns placed over a titanium root implanted in the gums. The cost of dental implants has become more affordable. Dental implants are quickly replacing traditional denture plates as a solution to missing teeth.

Implants Vs. Dentures

Dental Implants Dentures
  • Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth.
  • Dentures can appear unnatural in tooth size or be bulky inside the mouth making them appear unnatural.
  • Dental implants will not slip, slide or fall out of place.
  • Dentures can detached from the gums and fall out. When they detach from the gums, adhesive or bonding gel is required to reattach them. If you are out in public, this situation could be especially embarrassing.
  • Dental implants are unlikely to cause other oral health issues.
  • Food particles can get caught between the denture plate and the roof of your mouth. This can cause pain, mouth sores, gum disease or thrush.
  • Dental implants will not affect speech.
  • If not bonded correctly to the roof of your mouth, denture plates can become loose, making it difficult to speak. You will have to overcompensate while speaking to not make your dentures noticeable.
  • Dental implants can be kept for life.
  • Dentures may break, wear out or get lost.

Before You Decide

Before you decide on dental implants, you should know the procedure is slightly more involved than dentures. In some cases, both procedures may require tooth extractions and bone grafting. Making the decision on which procedure is best for you may be dependent on the current state of your oral health. If the teeth surrounding the open space are healthy, dental implants may be the perfect solution. Teeth that are rotted or decaying may require extraction making you an ineligible candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are placed in the mouth by surgically placing a titanium root into the gums. Surgery is done under local anesthetic in the dentist's office. Before deciding whether dentures or dental implants are best for you, talk to your dentist about the opions.
