Periodontics Q & A

What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty. The focus of periodontics is on the structures and surrounding tissues of the teeth, and the diseases and conditions that affect them. In particular, periodontists focus on the inflammatory diseases that can destroy gum tissue and bones. A cavity in a tooth usually affects only that tooth. Inflammatory gum disease, however, can affect the entire mouth and jaw, and may also lead to more serious generalized health problems.

Who Needs Periodontic Treatment?

Routine dental care, such as a filling, does not need the specialized services of a periodontist. However, serious inflammation or infection of the gums, tooth roots or underlying bone do require more specialized treatment. You are also more likely to need the services of a periodontist if surgery is required. You may not be able to tell how serious the condition is, but a dentist can examine your teeth and mouth and may refer you to a periodontist if necessary.

What Kinds of Procedures Does a Periodontist Do?

Periodontists offer more complex and extensive services than a general dentist. For example, a periodontist may provide scaling and root planing -- the cleaning of infected tooth root surfaces -- debridement or removal of damaged tissue, surgical procedures for advanced gum disease and dental implants for lost teeth.

Is There a Difference Between A Dentist and a Periodontist?

Dentists and periodontists receive the same basic training. After graduating from dental school, however, a periodontist goes on for more specialized training. The training takes about three years and includes training in the treatment of oral inflammation, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases like gingivitis (gum disease) as well as cosmetic rejuvenation procedures. Although a dentist may be able to handle minor periodontal problems, moderate to severe periodontal disease and complex or severe cases of inflammation or infection should be referred to a periodontist.
