Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medications to help people feel calm and relaxed. Sometimes called sleep dentistry, the medications allow you to remain relaxed and aware during the procedure. Sedation dentistry means that you are very unlikely to feel any pain; some patients even doze a little during the procedure.

When is Sedation Dentistry Used?

Sedation dentistry is very useful for people who are frightened or anxious about going to the dentist. It can also be useful for small children who have badly neglected teeth and need a lot of dental work. If you have a severe gag reflex or very sensitive teeth, sedation dentistry can help with both of those problems. Some people who need to have a lot of dental work done but want to limit their appointments find sedation dentistry useful for that purpose.

Is Sedation Dentistry Useful for Dentophobia?

Dentophobia is an extreme fear of going to a dentist or having any sort of dental procedure performed. It's not uncommon for dentophobia to begin after a traumatic experience at the dentist, or if a dentist seems uncaring and cold. The Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation reports that dentophobia occurs in about 30 percent of the population. Even people who don't have dentophobia may avoid going to the dentist unless it's an emergency. Dental sedation can be helpful for both groups.

Who Can Perform Sedation Dentistry?

Special training is required for sedation dentistry. The American Dental Association has specific standards and expectations for dentists who offer this procedure. In addition, the staff in the dental office must be trained to monitor patients and recognize potential problems, and must also be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The office must also have specialized equipment and supplies to monitor your blood pressure and oxygen levels. The additional training and careful monitoring help to keep patients safe during and after the procedure.
